RHSK Joins Housing Leaders, Provincial Government to Highlight Rental Affordability and Construction

August 20, 2026

RHSK was proud to stand alongside Saskatchewan’s Minister of Finance and Deputy Premier, the Honourable Jim Reiter, Nicole Burgess, CEO of the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association, and Tyler Hudy, Vice President of Public Affairs & Communications for the Saskatchewan REALTORS® Association, to discuss the collaborative efforts that continue to make Saskatchewan the most affordable province in Canada.

The results speak for themselves. Between July 2025 and July 2026, housing starts for single-family dwellings increased by 22.8%, and multi-unit housing starts rose by 24.5%. This represents the highest level of housing starts the province has seen in more than a decade, reflecting strong growth and confidence in Saskatchewan’s housing sector.

Saskatchewan’s affordability advantage continues to be supported through practical measures that help residents enter the housing market and encourage new housing development. Beginning in 2025, the First-Time Homebuyers’ Tax Credit was enhanced by 50%, increasing the maximum benefit to $1,575. The PST Rebate for New Home Construction provides a rebate of up to 42% of the PST paid on the purchase of a newly constructed home, condominium, or townhouse. The Secondary Suite Incentive Grant Program offers homeowners up to $35,000 to construct a new rental unit at their primary residence and has already contributed to the creation of more than 1,500 new rental units across Saskatchewan.

One of the lesser-known advantages for homeowners and builders is that these programs can be combined. Individuals building a new home while adding a secondary suite may be eligible to claim both the PST Rebate for New Home Construction and the Secondary Suite Incentive Grant Program, providing a maximum combined benefit of more than $46,000.

Saskatchewan’s affordability extends beyond home prices. Average asking rents in Regina are 52% lower than those in Vancouver and 22% lower than those in Calgary, helping make the province an attractive place to live, work, invest, and raise a family.

Through strong partnerships, thoughtful planning, and continued investment in housing, Saskatchewan is creating opportunities for residents today while building a strong foundation for future growth. RHSK is proud to be part of the conversation and the work being done to ensure our province remains a leader in housing affordability for years to come.
